The characteristics and functions of sponge sandpaper

Abrasive types, tape bases, binders, and processes of abrasive material sandpaper are constantly improving. For some grinding processes such as water-grinding sandpaper, dry-grinding sandpaper, and sponge sandpaper, high production efficiency, good appearance quality of the processed devices, and low production costs, it has been widely used in furniture production. The quality of the final product of household products is inseparable from the grinding process. Sponge sandpaper is the main tool for the grinding process.

The characteristics and functions of sponge sandpaper

Sponge sandpaper is a belt-like tool used to grind and polish flexible materials such as paper and cloth bonded by abrasive materials. The paper base is relatively hard and can grind a high-gloss and clean surface. Paper based sponge sandpaper is used in fine grinding and ultra-fine. The cloth base has higher strength than the paper base, and is less sensitive to temperature and humidity than the paper base. It will not lose its stability due to the increase of temperature and humidity. The durability of cloth sponge sandpaper is much higher than that of paper sponge sandpaper. The abrasives commonly used in furniture production are alumina, silicon carbide, aluminum zirconia, garnet, and hand sandpaper, and glass sand is used as abrasive. These abrasives have their own characteristics.

Abrasive material sponge sandpaper Generally speaking, coarse grinding, large plasticity, large grinding area, and coarse particle size are used to avoid embedded chips and soft workpieces; fine grains are used for fine grinding and hard workpieces. Abrasives are bonded to the belt base by binders. The binder should have strength, elasticity, heat resistance, water resistance, etc. At present, the commonly used binders are animal glue and synthetic resin. Animal glue is not water-resistant, and synthetic resin has good water resistance. Water-resistant sponge sandpaper uses water-resistant synthetic resin as the primer and re-glue, and carries out strict waterproof treatment. According to the functions of tape base, abrasive and binder, combined with the processing object and process technical requirements, the appropriate tape base, abrasive particles and binder can be selected to meet the requirements of grinding processing.

  How to use sponge sandpaper

Sponge sandpaper is very different from traditional page-shaped sandpaper. In comparison, we can see that sponge sandpaper has a certain softness and foldability, especially in the face of the curved surface and dead ends of processed parts. Traditional page-shaped sandpaper can only be seen far away, making many grinding masters unable to start. At this time, these small problems that seem to be difficult can be easily dealt with with with sponge sandpaper. In terms of manual grinding, it is difficult for page-shaped sandpaper to solve the heat problem emitted by friction. When the grinding master handles the workpiece, it is not only easy to feel hot, but also easy to be cut. The use of sponge sandpaper can play a role in protection, protection of workpieces and love for employees.

Precautions for the use of sponge sandpaper

  1. Polishing with sponge sandpaper requires the use of soft wooden sticks or bamboo sticks. When polishing round or spherical surfaces, the use of cork sticks can better match the curvature of the round and spherical surfaces. The harder wood strips, like cherry wood, are more suitable for polishing flat surfaces. Trim the ends of the wood strips so that they can match the shape of the steel surface, which can avoid deep scratches caused by the acute angles of the wood (or bamboo) touching the steel surface.

  2. When changing to a different type of sandpaper, the polishing direction should be changed to 45 °~ 90 °, so that the streak shadow left by the polishing of the previous type of sandpaper can be distinguished. Before changing to a different type of sandpaper, the polished surface must be carefully wiped with a cleaning solution such as 100% cotton flower dipped in alcohol, because a small piece of grit left on the surface can ruin the entire subsequent polishing work. This cleaning process is equally important when changing from sponge sandpaper polishing to diamond abrasive paste polishing. All particles and kerosene must be completely cleaned before polishing continues.

  3. In order to avoid scratching the surface of the workpiece, special care must be taken when polishing with #1200 and #1500 sandpaper. Therefore, it is necessary to load a light load and use a two-step polishing method to polish the surface. When polishing with each type of sandpaper, it should be polished twice in two different directions, with each rotation of 45 °~ 90 ° between the two directions.

During the use of the sponge sandpaper, pay attention to whether there are scratches on the surface of the grinding workpiece. If there are obvious scratches, please rule out the cause of the scratches. If you find that the surface of the sponge sand surface is uneven, do not continue to use it. Please replace the new sponge sandpaper and then polish it.
